About the Client
Casavi is a Munich-based property management platform that simplifies communication and workflows between property managers, residents, and service providers. Its mission is to make property management more transparent, efficient, and user-friendly through digital collaboration. The platform is trusted by property management companies and housing associations across Europe, helping them manage buildings, tenants, and service partners all in one place.
The Client's Initial Request
Casavi engaged DBB Software to optimize the data architecture behind its service provider platform, specifically migrating the service from MongoDB to SQL to align with the platform's broader database strategy:
Database Migration
Migrate the service from MongoDB to SQL without disrupting the reports to users.
01
Service Continuity
Ensure uninterrupted delivery of reports throughout the entire migration process, given the regulatory importance of timely reporting.
02
Data Integrity
Preserve all historical data during the transition, maintaining completeness and consistency for compliance and audit purposes.
03
Risk Mitigation
Implement a phased migration approach that minimizes the chance of data loss or service degradation at every stage.
04
Solutions We Delivered
DBB Software designed and executed a phased migration strategy that eliminated risk at each stage, ensuring the service continued delivering reports without interruption while the underlying database was completely replaced:
Infrastructure Setup & Dual-Write Implementation
The team provisioned and connected the new SQL infrastructure for the service, then updated the application logic to write data simultaneously to both MongoDB and SQL. This dual-write pattern allowed the transition to begin gradually without affecting the existing production workflow.
Historical Data Migration
All historical data was migrated from MongoDB to SQL, ensuring full data completeness and consistency in the new database. This step was critical for maintaining compliance with reporting requirements and preserving audit trails.
Controlled Read Switchover & Legacy Removal
Once the new data layer was validated, the service was switched to read exclusively from SQL. After confirming stable operation, the MongoDB dependency was fully removed, completing the migration with a clean, unified architecture.
Results Achieved
Unified Database Architecture
Removing the MongoDB dependency aligned the service with the broader platform's SQL-based architecture, reducing operational complexity and simplifying future maintenance.
Zero-Downtime Migration
The service continued operating without interruption throughout the entire migration, ensuring users received their reports on schedule.
Full Data Integrity Preserved
All historical data was migrated completely and consistently, maintaining compliance with EU Directive reporting requirements.
Reduced Operational Overhead
Consolidating onto a single database technology eliminated the need to maintain separate MongoDB infrastructure, lowering hosting costs and streamlining the team's DevOps responsibilities.
