Product Discovery for a Greenfield Fishing Creator-Economy & Marketplace Platform
DBB Software ran a Product Discovery engagement that turned the vision of a platform dedicated to fishing into a buildable System Design Document with scoped requirements, an evaluated technology stack, a modular architecture, and a de-risked, phased delivery plan.

About the Client
The client is building a greenfield consumer platform for the U.S. recreational fishing community, a ~$49B market with ~52M anglers. Their vision is to consolidate today's fragmented community into a single, one-stop product that covers content, creator subscriptions, charter booking, and a tackle marketplace.
The Client's Initial Request
The client engaged DBB Software for a Product Discovery: take an ambitious greenfield vision and produce a System Design Document the client could confidently fund and build against, rather than starting development against an open-ended brief.
Translate Vision Into Scoped Requirements
Turn a broad product idea into concrete functional and non-functional requirements with explicit in-scope / out-of-scope boundaries.
01
Resolve Build-vs-Buy
Evaluate and recommend a technology for every major component, with documented rationale and protection against vendor lock-in.
02
Define a Deliverable Architecture
Produce a system design that ships fast at MVP scale without foreclosing future scale.
03
De-Risk Delivery
Identify the top technical, project, and business risks up front, each with a concrete mitigation.
04
Make It Executable
Provide a phased delivery structure, team composition, and the external dependencies that gate each stage.
05
The Deliverables
DBB Software delivered a complete System Design Document that converts the vision into an executable engineering plan.
Phased Scope & Requirements
Structured the product into 4 independently releasable phases, each with explicit in-scope / out-of-scope lists, acceptance criteria, user-story epics, and a traceability matrix mapping every business requirement to a functional requirement.
Evaluated Technology Stack
Delivered a per-component evaluation across 8 build-vs-buy decisions (mobile, web, backend, primary database, cache, identity, payments, cloud): a single-language stack on a managed cloud, with managed specialist services owning the highest-risk capabilities rather than building them.
Architecture & Data Design
Specified the backend as a modular monolith with 14 bounded-context modules serving 4 client applications, including system, deployment, and integration views, plus 3 data-flow and 4 business-workflow diagrams covering content publishing, feed reads, and the two payment rails.
Non-Functional Requirements & Compliance
Defined 60+ measurable NFRs across 8 categories (performance, availability, scalability, security, observability, platform support, trust & safety, internationalization), with performance tied to Google Core Web Vitals, availability to AWS / DORA Elite benchmarks, and payments scoped to PCI DSS SAQ A. The compliance map covers 8 frameworks: PCI DSS, GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, DMCA, COPPA, Apple App Store §3.1.1, Google Play Developer Policy, and IRS 1099-K.
Risk Register & Delivery Plan
Produced 24 risks across 3 registers (technical, project, business), each with probability, impact, and concrete mitigation, plus a phased delivery plan in the ~10–13 month envelope typical for a multi-sided B2C platform, with team composition and hard dependency gates that verify each phase's external dependencies before that phase's build is committed.
Results Achieved
A Bounded Plan
A broad, multi-sided product idea is now a phased System Design Document the client can build from.
Build-vs-Buy Resolved
Every major component has a recommended technology with a documented rationale.
Risks Surfaced
Technical, project, and business risks each carry a mitigation, and phase-gating holds and expensive subsystems.
No Vendor Lock-In
Every managed-service choice ships with documented exit criteria, so each dependency stays a reversible decision as the platform grows.
